 Ashford Grange, North Yorkshire

A large country garden on a gently sloping site in North Yorkshire, the garden backs onto paddocks and is wide, and open to fields for miles around on two sides.

Though the garden can't be developed into the paddocks for planning reasons, our design took down the boundary between the paddock and the lawns of the garden, making a seamless opening up of views down the garden to the countryside beyond.

At the same time we needed to make the garden feel more protected from the sides. One side already has a lovely brick wall, so on the other we put in a long bespoke hardwood pergola, which will be eventually covered with climbing roses.

Clients can walk down the garden beneath this, occasionally drive down the garden to the barns at the other side of it, but when sitting in the main garden on the lawns by the pool they feel more secluded and enclosed because the garden has narrowed down.

Diane wanted a cottage garden style with 'Gertrude Jekyll' blues and pinks with lots of perennials and roses.
